Erika Tanquilut was our Ultimate Warrior in 2016. Erika had this to say, “I’m currently in Champaign taking more classes in my gap year between undergrad and medical school. I’m certified as an EMT, but work in the undergraduate organic chemistry labs. Hopefully I’ll be starting on my journey to my MD in the fall of 2021! I’d like to thank every single one of my coaches – Coach Neuberg, Coach Sweeney, and Coach Huizinga for each giving me a different skill that I used as an athlete that I still use today in my everyday life. I’d also like to thank Mrs. Laack for making me fall in love with chemistry!”
Sports Played at West: Swimming, Water Polo, Competitive Dance
College: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Class of 2020
Major: Chemistry and Psychology
Why You Chose Your College: I chose to attend the University of Illinois because of the wide range of opportunities that they offer their students in all areas of a college experience. The professors in the chemistry department are absolutely phenomenal and care so much about the students succeeding in their undergraduate academics and post-graduate endeavors. I’m currently working as an organic chemistry lab technician in order to improve my resume to get into medical school.
Current Occupation: Organic chemistry lab technician and student.
Favorite Athletic Memory at West: My favorite athletic memory is when Coach Sweeney and Coach Justine Haw led my competitive dance team to state in 2015 and we placed 3rd – first team to ever get podium at LWW!
Best Advice for Warrior Athletes: Being a warrior athlete isn’t just about being the best athlete in the pool, on the field, on the court, etc. It’s about the drive, the work ethic, that makes you a warrior athlete. Working everyday to make yourself a stronger athlete, a smarter scholar, and an altogether better person with a kind, compassionate heart is what being a warrior athlete is about. Take those skills that your coaches give you and use them for the rest of your life!
